In September 2004 C&C King asked DarkAngel, a modeller for the Verge Of Armageddon Red Alert 2 Mod for Battlefield: Vietnam, a few questions. We wanted to find out a few things about this mod and why using the Battlefield: Vietnam engine.
1) So how long you been in the community?
Quite a while actually, since Tiberian Sun.
2) So what is Verge Of Armageddon?
It is a BattleField: Vietnam mod, based upon Red Alert 2
3) Yeah, its rare that we get a modifcation based on C&C outside a C&C game, so this should be interesting. How it will compare to the Renegde version of the same concept?
BattleField: Vietnam has a very good engine to do the mod for. Renegade would die from using as many polygons as i do on my models, it is simply not powerful enough to do what we'd like it to do.
4) What do you plan to do apart from a graphics upgrade. It must be hugely beneficial over what the Renegade Alert team have at their disposal?
Yes in many ways it is. We are planning many possible things like having a commander building structures while having other players (in first person) fighting on the battle front. So unlike Renegade Alert the structures will not be there when you start a game, they will have to be built and placed manually. So essentially we plan to revamp the C&C mode so that it stays true to the C&C RTS games. It could prove difficult, but it is indeed possible. But i am not a scripter so i have no idea how it would work.
5) When could we see this being played publically on the Internet?
We are still in the Alpha stages, so no ETA as yet.
6) Anything else that we should know about?
We have a few models of a few tanks, bases, structures, and a few pictures on a custom made map that we will do our alpha testing on. All these can be found at our website.
7) OK DarkAngel, thanks very much for the insight into Verge Of Armageddon
No problem.
