Service Depot: Installing Command & Conquer: Sole Survivor

This guide will show you how to install Command & Conquer: Sole Survivor on modern operating systems.

Installation – conventional

  1. Insert the Sole Survivor disc to the CD/DVD drive.
  2. If running a 32-bit system, exit the autorun and run setup.exe from the disc’s setup subfolder as administrator. (not applicable to Windows XP)
    If running a 64-bit system, use WineVDM to run setup.exe from the disc’s setup subfolder to properly emulate it as a 16-bit application.
  3. Install the game.
  4. Patch the game to version 1.05, the latest official patch, (mirror)
  5. Download CnC-DDraw and unpack it in the game directory.
  6. Open cnc-ddraw.ini in a text editor and, anywhere below line 90, insert the following:
    ; Command & Conquer Sole Survivor
    [sole]
    maxgameticks=120
  7. Save the file and close it.
  8. Run the game.

Installation – alternative

The game’s installer is 16-bit, and is unable to run on 64-bit systems. If the WineVDM version does not work, do the following:

  1. Insert the Sole Survivor disc to the CD/DVD drive.
  2. Use a tool like WinPack or UniExtract 1.6.x to extract the files from setup.z found within the disc to an accessible and empty directory.
  3. Patch the game to version 1.05, the latest official patch. (mirror)
  4. Download CnC-DDraw and unpack it in the game directory.
  5. Open cnc-ddraw.ini in a text editor and, anywhere below line 90, insert the following:
    ; Command & Conquer Sole Survivor
    [sole]
    maxgameticks=120
  6. Save the file and close it.
  7. Run the game.

Note that the disc’s autorun won’t change the Install button to the Play button, but the game will still run properly if it is run directly from the executable.
