Factions

As in Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars there will be once again 3 factions returning in Kane's Wrath. The GDI and Nod are both back as well as the Scrin who introduced in Tiberium Wars.

Brotherhood of Nod
During the Third Tiberium War the Brotherhood of Nod again emerged from the shadows to battle GDI. In the very early stages of the Third Tiberium War, Nod launches a successful attack on GDI's Goddard Space Center, rendering all of GDI's anti-missile capabilities useless. GDI is caught off guard, with its senior commanders and acting director up in the Philadelphia for the annual energy summit. Due to the loss of its anti-missile defences, the Philadelphia becomes vulnerable to attack and is quickly destroyed by a Nod missile. Nod uses the confusion to attack all major GDI installations and were almost successful in taking the "North Eastern Blue Zone" (North American Eastern Seaboard). However, GDI rallied its forces and drove Nod out of the regions they had captured.

It quickly became apparent that Kane and his leading scientists were working on a liquid tiberium bomb which would be strong enough to wipe GDI from the face of the planet. While GDI was in Africa, destroying what it believed to be Nod's chemical weapons factories, Nod was transporting its new weapon from the real chemical factories in South America to their reconstructed temple in Sarajevo in eastern Europe. After GDI finished their campaign in Africa, they turned their attention to Nod's stronghold. What GDI did not know, however, was that they had been lured into a trap.

GDI flocked to Sarajevo in hopes that this would be the final encounter with the Brotherhood of Nod. They established strong footholds deep in Nod territory and used them as leverage to launch a devastating attack on Nod's Temple Prime. During the attacks, Kane stealthily slipped away, knowing that his work there was complete. When GDI was successful in neutralizing Nod's ion disruption towers, they fired upon the temple with their ion cannon. When the ion cannon was fired, the temple was destroyed instantly. The ion particles broke through the layers of the temple until it reached the lowest lying part, wherein the liquid tiberium bomb lay. Upon contact with the ion particles, it detonated, sending shock waves across the planet. Millions of people in Eastern Europe were feared dead, but to Director Redmond Boyle - it was a price worth paying for the death of Kane and Nod.

Nod followers were understandably shocked. Their temple was destroyed and their great leader was dead. Kane's second in command, General Killian Qatar, took over control of the Brotherhood and called all forces to her Australian base so that they may be able to regroup. Unbeknownst to them, the liquid tiberium blast had other consequences. An alien species known as the Scrin had been waiting on the edge of our solar system for millennia for a signal to invade Earth: a liquid tiberium explosion. The Scrin landed in Red Zones and began deploying infantry, spacecraft and vehicles against any resistance they encountered. In Australia, Killian Qatar made a desperate alliance with GDI to fight off the new threat. During a major battle in Australia, Kane resurfaced, and was furious at Killian for allying herself with GDI and ordered her death. Killian was killed and Kane revealed his masterful plan.

The tacitus from the Second Tiberium War had contained information on a future alien invasion, and that the invasion would begin when a liquid tiberium explosion occurred. Kane saw this as an opportunity to invite a superior race to Earth - one with vast knowledge of tiberium. However, Kane and his scientists could not find a strong enough detonator to get the desired results. As a result, Kane started a war with GDI, knowing that they would retaliate with their ion cannon on his temple - the only force strong enough to detonate the bomb to gain the necessary explosion.

When the Scrin arrived on Earth they began to construct giant towers. When each of these towers was constructed, they would become an interstellar gateway to other galaxies and worlds. Also, on completion, they would become invulnerable to any attack. The towers housed vast information on tiberium.

After GDI fought off the initial Scrin attack, it noticed the towers for the first time. Knowing that whatever the towers do could not possibly be good, they launched co-ordinated attacks on every tower across the globe. Kane realised that at least one tower must live for this campaign to be successful and orders Nod's energy to be focused on defending one particular tower in southern Italy, near where tiberium first came to earth in the form of a meteorite. GDI assaults the tower with tremendous force but is held back by Nod and is eventually pushed from the area. All other towers across the globe were destroyed and the tower in southern Italy was the last one standing. Kane's plan, as a result, was a success.

Global Defense Initiative
Over the seventeen year period of peace that would follow after the Firestorm incidents and the Global Defense Initiative acquiring the mysterious Tacitus device, many things would begin to change. GDI gradually began to shut down what would become over 60% of their military bases and outposts worldwide, and additionally began to retire the bulk of their walker technology used primarily in the Second Tiberium War in favor of upgraded designs of more traditional weapon platforms. Officially, all of this was done in a bid to cut costs in response to the economic strains that came with human civilization becoming increasingly displaced and isolated into the few pockets of still habitable land across the world, as the result of the Tiberium substance's continued and relentless spreading over the Earth's surface. Many of the individual nations in the world collapsed, leaving only GDI to pick up the pieces and forcing the organization to become not only the military unification of its member states, but their administrative and political unification as well.

By the year of 2047, Tiberium contamination on Earth had progressed to such a degree that GDI was prompted into dividing the surface of the planet into three distinct types of geographical zones based on the levels of local infestation. 30% of the world's surface has been designated as "red zones", which had suffered the worst contamination and can no longer support human - or otherwise carbon-based - life. 50% of the regions in the world have been designated as "yellow zones", which are dangerously contaminated yet still contain most of the world's population. Decades of war and civil unrest have left these regions in a state of social collapse, and had continued to provide the Brotherhood of Nod with opportunity for concealment and large-scale recruitment over the years. The remaining 20% of the Earth's surface is unscarred by Tiberium outbreak and is relatively untouched by war. These "blue zones" are considered the last refuge and hope of the human civilized world, and have been placed under the direct protection of the Global Defense Initiative.

The apparent peace between GDI and Nod of the last seventeen years proves to have been the silence before the storm however, as the Brotherhood of Nod suddenly infiltrates Goddard Space Center and disables GDI's A-SAT defense systems responsible for defending GDI's space operations from hostile attacks. Nod then launches a nuclear missile at the Philadelphia at the precise moment GDI's senior leadership is in council onboard, virtually beheading the organization and throwing them into chaos as Nod launches a coordinated attack upon every major blue zone in the world. GDI manages to recover and re-organize itself however, and repels Nod from the blue zones after several weeks of fierce urban warfare, and launches a counterattack upon what is thought to be a Nod chemical weapons facility in Egypt. It is revealed that this facility was researching and developing a liquid Tiberium bomb of unprecedented power. GDI cripples Nod's nuclear capabilities in Cairo before proceeding to Sarajevo and firing the ion cannon on the Brotherhood's "Temple Prime" by order of acting GDI director Redmond Boyle, against the wishes of GDI General Granger. The Ion Cannon hits a liquid Tiberium deposit beneath the "Temple Prime", vaporizing it and inadvertently causing a large chain reaction of destruction across Eastern Europe which results in the death of millions within the region.

At the moment GDI believes it has prevailed a third time, alien invaders known only as the Scrin suddenly descend from the reaches of space and wreak havoc upon GDI and Nod alike. GDI discovers the invaders are constructing massive, monolithic towers for an unknown purpose and, after barely managing to withstand the initial planetary assault of the invaders, sets out to systematically destroy each of them. One tower survives the conflict however, and is as a result of its completion partially phased into another dimension and thus invulnerable to all forms of weaponry known to mankind. GDI has nonetheless won the day; Kane is seemingly dead, Nod is scattered, and GDI's destruction of the alien control node in Italy has neutralized all alien forces.

Scrin
The formal introduction of the Scrin occurs in the third game in the series. Revealed not as a race using Tiberium to xenoform Earth, the Scrin instead are portrayed as a group focused entirely on the harvesting of Tiberium itself, which they call Ichor. Directly overseeing the operation for Earth is Foreman 371, the player. The player's assistant is the intelligent Mothership the Foreman is based on.

Attracted to Earth due to a massive liquid Tiberium ("Liquid-T" or "Ichor LQ", in the alien's terminology) explosion, the Scrin initiate standard harvesting procedures, deploying ships to the planet surface. To their surprise, Earth is not in the condition they expected: Tiberium levels are premature, the human race is not on the brink of extinction and native forces are organized enough to be a serious military threat. Their method of Tiberium harvesting seems to be as follows: Seed a world with it, wait until the levels are high enough to cause a natural liquid-T explosion, and then begin the actual harvesting by constructing massive structures called Threshold towers, which act as both refineries and interstellar gateways to a place called the "Ichor Hub". It is assumed that by this time, any remaining indigenous forces will be too minor to pose a serious threat.

The first sign that something is wrong occurs when the deployed ships are attacked by GDI's ion cannon network, prompting evasive action. When the Mothership recommends that harvesting be aborted after the military threat level is revealed to be too high, the Supervisor appears for the first time and overrides the recommendation, ordering attacks on population centers to disrupt native forces in order to lure them away from more critical operations. He also orders harvesting operations and construction of the "Relay Node" and "Threshold" structures to begin as planned.

Information-gathering missions reveal that the liquid-T explosion was not natural, but rather deliberately staged to trick them into arriving. What is truly surprising however is when the person who orchestrated the trickery is revealed to be Kane: The Supervisor exclaims that "this being [Kane] already exists in the data core, genetic derivations unknown", implying that they somehow already knew of him prior to the events of the game, but that the nature of Kane's genetic material is not being recognized even by their ancient and vast knowledge. This alludes to a possible reason for Kane's apparent immortality and vast knowledge.

The Supervisor orders more information gathering to be done, but the Mothership strongly protests since this will lead to stranding the Foreman on Earth. Eventually, the ship forcibly cuts the Supervisor's communications link. Priority is diverted to ensuring at least one Threshold structure reaches completion, since they contain the means to evacuate the player. This is done and the player makes it to the safety of the 'Ichor Hub' with their ship. Meanwhile, a jittery Supervisor is reporting to the Overlord, explaining the situation. The Overlord orders a full invasion force to be assembled, promising that "Earth. Will. Fall."
